The Weirdest Ways We Use Animals in Food

To many people, meat, fish, dairy, eggs, shellfish and crustaceans are some of the only animal products that are suitable for consumption, though there are few who disagree when it comes to the latter two. But in certain parts of the world there are some strange foods with questionable ingredients which may just leave you scratching your head – or gagging. But to the locals, they’re delicacies and are very much a part of the country’s culinary traditions. If you’re curious about these unusual foods, take a look at these crazy ones that use animals in unconventional ways.

1. Cow Eye in Tacos/Tacos De Ojos

For all the taco lovers out there, there’s a variation in Mexico known locally as “tacos de ojos” you might want to try. Consuming animal eyes is pretty common in many parts of the world, and tacos de ojos is one of the better-known dishes. If you can’t fly out to Mexico to get your hands on some, then simply throw together some corn tortillas, lime, red chili sauce, pico de gallo, avocado and of course, cubed cow eyes which are said to have a juicy and gelatinous texture.

2. Snail Eggs in Caviar/Caviar d’escargot

It sounds really off-putting, but snail caviar or caviar d’escargot is a big deal in France where it’s steadily rising in popularity. So much so that folks are willing to pay up to £1,500 for just a kilogram! The dish consists of the pearly white eggs of land snails; it is commonly served on its own, with warm toast or in soups. Enthusiasts of this cuisine swear by its deliciousness, which is said to be reminiscent of baked mushroom or baked asparagus with a subtle hint of woody notes.

3. Maggots in Cheese/Casu Martzu

In certain parts of Italy, there’s a very disturbing type of cheese called “casu martzu” that literally means “rotten cheese.” As the name suggests, it’s basically fermented, rotten cheese where maggots are used to create a liquid-filled cheese. Apparently, the maggots get eaten too, right along with the rest of the soft, stinky cheese. It’s only legal on the island of Sardinia though, as the rest of Italy has made the dish illegal due to the numerous health and safety concerns it presents.

4. Fire Ants in Chutney/Chaprah

Chaprah is a type of chutney which is a type of Indian spread. But don’t let your guard down, because this one is made by grinding dried red ants and their eggs into a paste. As you may have suspected, it’s pretty hot, maybe more so than chilis and other fire peppers. The locals love it though and will mix the paste with various herbs, spices, sugar, vegetables and aromatics before serving it. They also believe it provides some medicinal benefits, despite there not being much evidence of it.

5. Fried Arachnids

Most people are downright scared of arachnids, but there are those who catch them for food, you know, kind of like fishing. By far, tarantulas and scorpions are the arachnid specialties on most menus, most likely due to their bigger sizes. They are typically served seasoned and fried; most say that tarantula legs are comparable to more conventional meats like chicken. Fried arachnids are usually only consumed in economically unstable countries, although there are some brave westerners who have eaten it as part of a challenge.

Elon Musk’s Weirdest Moments

Elon Musk is a self-made billionaire known best for being the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. Those who browse through social media every now and then, know that the South African entrepreneur has gained a reputation as an oddball thanks to his weird takes on certain issues, as well as his absurd claims. He’s a strange man who never hesitates to share his equally baffling opinions with the rest of the world. Below is just a snippet of some of Elon Musk’s weirdest moments thus far.

1. That Time He Gave His Baby an Unconventional Name

Now he’s definitely not the only celebrity who’s given their child a strange name; some have named their children after colors and plants, fruits and even insects and sports. But Elon Musk and partner Grimes’ baby’s name looked like a bunch of random and unintelligible letters. How exactly do you pronounce “X Æ A-Xii”? According to the couple, their son’s name is a blend of their mutual love of mystery, artificial intelligence and a 1960s CIA aircraft. Talk about being creative.

2. That Time He Claimed A Monkey Could Play Video Games with Its Mind

If you’re familiar with Elon Musk, then you should know that he is somewhat (very) obsessed with intelligence – if the chips he wants to implant into our brains is anything to go by. But artificial intelligence holds a special place in his heart. So, when he claimed to have created the technology that will allow monkeys to play video games with their minds, people were shocked. For some reason, the billionaire wanted to see monkeys play Pong. If he isn’t careful, we could have a real-life version of Rise of the Planet of the Apes on our hands.

3. That Time He Claimed to Have Created A Bionic Pig

Musk didn’t stop with just primates; pigs have also caught his attention, which led to the alleged creation of a bionic pig named Gertrude. Like the monkeys, Musk claimed that there’s a working computer chip in its brain, and attempted to prove his point by prodding the pig’s snout with a straw, causing a graph of her brain activity to light up. A few seemed convinced while the majority were understandably doubtful, viewing it as just another of his publicity stunts.

4. That Time He Got into An Argument About Stealing a Gassy Unicorn

No, he didn’t get his hands on a mythical creature and captured its flatulence. Rather, the so-called unicorn fart is an artwork by Colorado potter Tom Edwards, who created mugs that depicted a cartoon unicorn harvesting its gas to power an electric car. Elon Musk seemed to have taken a liking to it and featured it in Tesla’s sketch pad software and Christmas design card. He got into a spat with the potter’s daughter who reached out to him on Twitter about not giving her father credit. Well, it wasn’t much of an argument: a few words were exchanged online and the entire ordeal was quietly resolved a month later.

5. His Really Odd Music

When he’s not prodding in monkey and pig brains, Elon Musk is probably putting together peculiar music that reflects his strange mind. Looking for some inspiration? Then listen to his dance single titled “Don’t Doubt Ur Vibe.” The track is an odd mix of European trance music and motivational mantras repeated over a backdrop of rising synth. There was also that time in 2019 where he released a trap song that talked about the shooting of Harambe the ape who was put down after a child climbed into its enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo.

People Who Changed the World by Breaking the Rules

Much of the privilege and knowledge we enjoy today was once vilified by the powers that be who sought to maintain the status quo. Luckily for us, there have always been individuals who showed no regard for those limiting rules that were meant to keep us down. They wholeheartedly stood their ground and kept pushing on to bring about some much-needed change. These are five people who made the world a better place by breaking the rules.

1. Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela became the first Black president of South Africa in 1994, but this was only after a long string of imprisonments for speaking out against Apartheid – a legal system that was put in place for the overall benefit of the minority white population. He peacefully protested against the system several times and every time was met with imprisonment, notably between 1948 to 1956 and again in 1962, when he was sentenced for life. After his release in 1990, he continued to protest nonetheless and finally achieved his goal in 1993.

2. Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant mind who was way ahead of his time. He was an artist who created outstanding works of arts, an engineer who designed advanced technology (tanks, airplanes, submarines) and even dabbled in medicine. During his lifetime, da Vinci dissected at least 30 corpses, which led to the discovery that the heart, and not the liver, was at the center of the circulatory system. Naturally, he received a lot of hate and resistance from the higher ups, who accused him of unseemly conduct and perhaps even witchcraft, putting an end to his work.

3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. is often seen by many as one of the most prominent faces of the Civil Rights movement. He quickly stood out among his peers as a charismatic and powerful leader who advocated for racial equality for African Americans in the form of nonviolent resistance like nonviolent protests and prayer vigils. Like many activists of his time, he was arrested for alleged civil disobedience, a whopping twenty-nine times in total. Perhaps he is best known for his “I Had a Dream” which detailed his vision of the future of America.

4. Rosa Parks

While Rosa Parks wasn’t the first to refuse to give up her seat, her refusal to do so led to a series of events that brought an end to the legal segregation in Alabama’s public transport system. It was December 1, 1955 when a white man insisted that Rosa Parks make her way to the colored section in the back. Naturally, she refused, and was arrested for so-called “civil disobedience.” This led to a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system by activists and a little over a year later, the divisive bus system came to an end.

5. Susan B. Anthony

Despite being mainly associated with the suffrage movement, Susan B. Anthony actually fought for equality on all levels, including race. She started collecting anti-slavery petitions from the age of 17, and received hundreds of thousands of signatures in support. Shortly after slavery came to an end, she shifted her focus on women’s right and, in 1872, was arrested for “illegally” voting during an election in Rochester, New York. She held her ground and refused to pay the fine. Her activism eventually paid off, and fourteen years after her death, the 19th amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote.
