The word “tocsin” has occasionally been spelt similarly to its homonym “toxin,” despite the difference in their meanings. Rather, tocsin is derived from the Middle French word “toquassen” which in turn came from the Vulgar Latin verb “tocarre” meaning “to ring a bell.”
